How Does Estelle Bridal Keep Bridal Appointments Hygienic?
At Estelle Bridal, we are disinfecting hard surfaces, using UV and bleach solution. Also, we use air disinfectant spray between appointments. We will keep a reinforced, deep cleaning routine every night. Stylists will wash their hands before and after every appointment. We will ask our Stylists, Brides, and guests to disinfect their hands using hand sanitizer before entering the boutique to their private suite using hand sanitizer provided by Estelle Bridal.
How Are Sample Wedding Gowns Kept Clean Between Fittings?
We practice a sanitization process, using a high-temperature hand steamer and UV for our dresses.
After each Fitting, dresses are placed on their hanger, performing a 20-second steam vaporizing treatment using the right temperatures depending on the fabric.
The dress is in a sanitized sheath, and a garment cover ensures no further contact before The Bride receives her dress on the wedding date.
What Are Brides and Guests Asked to Do Before an Appointment?
We have the following guidelines in agreement with other boutiques in the region. So all our brides know what to expect when bridal gown shopping in the new normal.
We require our staff, guests, and Brides to wear a mask. If you do not have a mask, we will not keep your appointment, and we will be happy to reschedule one at your earliest convenience. Please make sure your mask covers your entire nose and mouth area.
At the moment, due to the contingency, we will be working only by appointment. Appointments include the bride plus up to 3 guests, and more guests can be added at an extra cost. We are very sorry, but we will not accommodate small children as part of your party for the foreseeable future and recommend that high-risk individuals stay home.
Alterations appointments will be limited to just the Bride and seamstress for the foreseeable future.
Please reschedule your appointment if you are experiencing symptoms, have tested positive in the past 14 days, or have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive or is experiencing symptoms. We will give you a scheduling priority!

What Is a Wedding Dress Fitting?
A wedding dress fitting is an appointment after you have bought your gown, where a seamstress pins and marks it so it can be altered to your exact body. It is not the same as a bridal appointment, which is the earlier visit where you try on sample gowns and choose one. Almost every gown needs at least one fitting, because bridal sizing does not match street sizing and no gown arrives ready to wear.
The two appointments get confused constantly, so here is the difference in one place:

How Many Wedding Dress Fittings Do You Need?
Most brides need two to three fittings. One is rare and usually means the gown needed very little work. More than three usually means the gown is being altered several sizes, or the design is being changed.

A gown built to your measurements changes this picture. There is no size to move, so the fittings are about refinement rather than reconstruction, and there are usually fewer of them.
How Long Does a Wedding Dress Fitting Take?
Plan 30 to 60 minutes for each fitting. The first is the longest, because the seamstress is assessing the whole gown and pinning it. Later fittings are shorter. If you are also trying veils, shoes or jewelry at the same visit, add another 20 minutes.
A first bridal appointment, where you are choosing rather than altering, runs longer at 60 to 90 minutes.
How Should a Wedding Dress Fit?
A wedding dress should sit close enough that it stays up with no help, and loose enough that you can breathe fully, sit down, raise your arms and eat a meal. If you are holding your breath in the mirror, it is too tight. If you are hitching it up as you walk, it is too loose.
How tight should a wedding dress be?
The bodice should stay in place when you lift both arms above your head without anyone holding it. You should be able to fit two fingers flat between the gown and your ribcage, and take a full breath in without the boning digging in. A gown fitted at the absolute limit on the day of the final fitting will be uncomfortable after eight hours, a meal and dancing.
What should you check at every fitting?
Run through the same list each time, because problems are much cheaper to fix early:
- Stand, sit, walk and climb a step in the gown, not just stand still
- Lift your arms over your head and check the bodice holds
- Check the hem at the front while wearing your actual wedding shoes
- Look at the back in a second mirror, since that is what guests see for most of the ceremony
- Check for gaping at the neckline and armholes when you lean forward
- Practice the bustle yourself, then have someone else try it
What Should You Bring to a Wedding Dress Fitting?
Bring the shoes you will actually wear, the undergarments you will actually wear, and any shaping garment you plan to use. The hem cannot be marked accurately without the right shoe height, and the bodice cannot be fitted properly over the wrong bra.
Also bring your veil or headpiece if you have one, any jewelry you plan to wear, and the person who will be bustling your gown on the day. That last one is the item brides most often forget, and it is the reason bustles get fumbled at receptions.
Should you wear makeup to a wedding dress fitting?
Keep it light, and avoid anything that transfers. Heavy foundation, bronzer, self tan and lipstick all mark pale silk and lace, and some of it does not come out. If you have had a spray tan, tell the shop before you arrive. Deodorant should be dry before you put the gown on.
How Do You Prepare for a Wedding Dress Fitting?
Book the first fitting six to eight weeks out, and book all your fittings when you order the gown rather than later. Houston seamstresses fill up hard in the two local wedding peaks, March through May and September through November, so a slot that is easy to get in January is difficult in April.
Beyond booking, three things make the appointment go well. Eat normally beforehand, because fitting a gown on an empty stomach gives you a measurement you cannot live in. Arrive with clean, dry skin and no body lotion or oil. And bring a written note of your ceremony and reception venues, because a seamstress will hem differently for grass than for a ballroom floor.
Do You Need an Appointment to Try On Wedding Dresses?
Yes, at almost every bridal boutique in Houston, including ours. Walk ins are usually turned away or asked to wait, because each bride needs a fitting room, a stylist and often a private suite for the time she is there. Booking ahead is also what lets a shop pull gowns in your size before you arrive instead of during your appointment.
Book two appointments in a day at most, three only if they sit in the same part of the city. Houston traffic between the Galleria and Katy or The Woodlands will eat an hour each way on a Saturday and you will arrive at the second one unable to concentrate.
How Much Does a Wedding Dress Appointment Cost?
Most Houston bridal appointments are free. Some boutiques charge a consultation fee, typically a small amount that is credited against a purchase, and some charge a cancellation fee if you do not show. Neither is always shown on the booking page, so ask when you book.

Are Sample Wedding Gowns Clean to Try On?
At a well run bridal boutique, yes. Sample gowns are steamed at high temperature between appointments, spot cleaned at the hem and underarm, and rotated off the rail when they can no longer be brought back. The protocols described earlier on this page are the ones we run at every bridal appointment, and they are worth asking about anywhere you shop, because a sample gown may have been tried on by dozens of brides before you.
It is a fair question to ask at the door, and a good shop will answer it without being defensive. If you are ordering a gown made to your measurements, the question disappears, because the fabric is cut new for you.
